Eugene ‘Pug’ Matweecha, 89, of McAdoo, passed away Monday morning at home.
Born in McAdoo, he was the son of the late Peter and Anna (Maschak) Matweecha, and a member of St. Mary’s U.C. Church, McAdoo.
As a young man, Pug worked in his father’s independent coal mine. He graduated from McAdoo High School in 1949 and then enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. and served during the Korean War.
After returning from the Marines, Pug worked at various area coal companies including Hammond Coal Co., Yamulla Coal Co., and Max Smith Coal Co. He was a mechanic for Fauzio Brothers Coal Co., Capparell Coal Co., and Pagnotti Coal Co. Pug was licensed to handle and fire heavy explosives of all kinds. He later retired from P.P.L. in Hazleton as a Master Mechanic of Heavy Equipment.
Pug was a Trustee and mechanic for the McAdoo Fire Co. He was Senior Vice Commander for the American Legion and a member of the firing squad of the McAdoo V.F.W. Post 6708. Pug was also a member of the United Mine Workers Union, Steel Workers Union and Electrical Workers Union.
Preceding him in death, are his wife Marjorie (Wisgo) Matweecha; brothers Anthony, Michael, Peter, Paul, and Roger Matweecha; and sisters Martha Pellock and Mary Semasek.
Surviving, are his daughter Jean Ann Matweecha-Majetsky of McAdoo; daughter Judith M. Palmer and husband Michael of Allentown; son-in-law Richard Majetsky of Quakake; grandchildren Megan Jean Majetsky of Mahanoy City, Michael E. Palmer of Allentown; great-grandson Carter T. Freil-Majetsky; sister-in-law Anna Rose Matweecha of Hazleton; and many nieces and nephews also survive.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Divine Liturgy with Office of Christian Burial to be celebrated Friday at 11 a.m. in St. Mary’s U.C. Church, McAdoo. Rev. D. George Worschak will be the celebrant. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.
A calling hour will be held Friday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Damiano Funeral Home, Inc., McAdoo.
