Eugene Joseph Mondell, 83, of Allentown and formerly of McAdoo, passed away Monday evening at Luther Crest Senior Living of Allentown.
Born in Tresckow, he was the son of the late Peter and Helen (Hametz) Mondell and stepfather, the late Steven Strachko.
Eugene was a member of St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, McAdoo.
He was a Korean War veteran, serving in the U.S. Army.
Prior to retiring in 1995, he was employed at Bethlehem Steel Corp.
Eugene was a proud and loving father of three and a cherished mentor and grandfather to his two grandsons.
He was a longtime trustee and custodian of St. Mary’s U.C. Church. Eugene moved to Allentown nine years ago to be with his family before moving to Country Meadows Retirement Community, Allentown.
Eugene enjoyed movies, taking vacations with his family, picking blueberries, and attending sporting events in Hazleton and then with his grandsons.
Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents and stepfather, are his son Eugene J. Mondell, Jr.; and wife Catherine (Yatsula) Mondell.
Surviving, are his daughters Janice Haninchick and companion Michael Katchur of Allentown; and Sandra Tancreti and husband David of Woodbridge, VA; grandsons Ryan and Aaron Haninchick; and brother Nicholas Mondell of Olney, MD.
His funeral will be held Saturday from the Damiano Funeral Home, Inc., Blaine and Cleveland Streets, McAdoo at 9:30 a.m. Rev. George Worschak will celebrate the Divine Liturgy with Office of Christian Burial in St. Mary’s U.C. Church, McAdoo at 10 a.m. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.
Calling hours will be held Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. in the funeral home. A Parastas service will be held at 7:30 p.m.
